It was a very typical autumn Sydney Day. Cold overnight temperatures and a warm pleasant day. Today was different. It was ANZAC Day and after paying our respects at the various commemorative ceremonies in the morning it was off to a very different battle at Blackman Park.

From memory, last year Queenwood were a hard opponent, so our expectations were high coming into the game. We also had a forfeit last week so with a healthy combination of a few new faces and plenty of old ones from last year we were all looking forward to our first game. Coach Greg asked what our strategy was for the game. Coach Jono replied “Have fun, enjoy the first game and see where we end up”.

Fierce tackling pressure

Freya was late arriving so missed the first bounce, but after an early free kick and a chain of marks down the line, the local supporters cheered the quality football on display. Our defence was never really troubled throughout the day. Both Sami and Genevieve (filling in from the U12’s) controlled the ball anytime danger loomed large. We rotated the team around positions to get a feeling of where they will play their football this season. The result was a very solid performance from every player involved. Lexie P topped the scoring with 4 majors and lots of marks in the forward 50, Sienna who played her first game for the Cats today ended up with 2 goals kicking straight with confidence, Hannah and Zali, also provided much needed speed and pressure around the ball. Queenwood were a slightly taller side than us, but speed and agility were key to our success today. Milly, Grace and Krysta played in positions all over the ground and it was great to see that the pre-season training drills have helped them develop and contribute to the team. All of those marks in the forward line were taken because of the great supply from our mid-field. They worked as a team and will become a formidable group as the season wears on. Freya and Eliza shared the ruck work, whilst Lizzy and Zara gobbled up all the ground balls. It was a warm day, but none of them seemed to be bothered by this and ran everywhere to help out where possible. Maia and Elin kicked straight all day and hit targets which is a difficult but essential part of the game.

1 of 4 goals

Some highlights for me:

  • Sam Hynes (umpire) award a free kick against his sister for an incorrect disposal. I would have loved to hear the discussion around this, post game.
  • Elin’s attempted shepherd on an opponent, cannoned the opponent into the back of our player and we received the free kick. Sometimes you do win some.
  • Freya and Dad Game starts at 15:40pm Next Sunday 3rd May!
celebrating a win

The Cats won 10-3-63 to Queenwood 3-3-21
