Friday night footy under lights at St Ives was a special treat for our u10 Selwood boys. An unfortunate late withdrawal from our Supercoach Tony and star player Jonti created opportunities for others to step up.

St Ives relished the home ground advantage and dominated the first half in the Friday night spotlight. Our mids were under the pump early losing the clearances but tightened up with stronger tackling in the second half. Skillful marking in defence from Jude and Ryan helped stem the flow of St Ives goals in the first half. Oscar read the play cleverly, taking a few grabs on the last line of defence too. Harry and Aza were brutal & relentless tacking machines, while Ollie M and Hamish both showed courage with strong second halves after some big early bumps. Jerry was productive with long kicks, linking up well with Archer’s safe hands. Ollie L loves to ‘see ball, get ball’ like a magnet when it’s in his zone. Ivan burst onto the field late in Q2 making an immediate impact, and was barnstorming in the second half. Xavier’s skills are brilliant and he was combining well with Archer as usual. Parkes backed up his starring role last week with another solid match.

Parkes is clearly a thinker and is sure to become an excellent Coach one day, as he shared the opposition’s centre bounce strategy with our team at half time. The weary lads from Lane Cove could have thrown in the towel being scoreless at halftime. However we focused on simple strategies like marking up in defence, and making space in the midfield. We lifted our effort to score two goals in the second half – one goal to Harry after a strong grab to nail his first in Lane Cove Cats colours, then Ryan’s goal was the icing on the cake for an excellent passage of team play in Q4. The parents & coaches were proud of seeing the boys fight out the tough match right until the end, never giving up. Coaches Awards went to Harry and Parkes, with Harry’s first goal & tacking impressive, matched by the determination and strategy of Parkes.

Next Sunday 6 September we have a Father’s Day special, hosting Balgowlah Suns Blue with an earlier 9.30am start at Blackman Park. Be there by 9am for our second last match and final home game in 2020.
