Sundays match against the Lane Cove Cats Blicavs was, as predicted, a hard, closely fought match. The main difference between the two sides was the Blicavs superiority at getting contested possession. There were times when I think our boys decided to allow the Blicavs to grab the ball, so that we could immediately tackle them.

Sometimes this worked and we got a free kick for holding the ball or incorrect disposal, but there were times when the Blicavs were able to get out of the tackle or get a pass away, which in turn meant that they scored and we didn’t. This is clearly an area where we need to improve, however given our boys are still 8 years old or younger, there is plenty of time to develop this aspect of the game, although now is as good a time as any to start!

There were lots of things to admire in the way we played however. Our pressure around the ball continues to improve, and we saw some great tackles, especially from Aza, Ryan, Jonti and Ivan. As always Ryan, Hamish, Jonti and Ivan snagged some terrific marks, Ollie and Jerry got lots of ball, and made some great runs, and Ben and Jack are improving their skills weekly. Our kicks are now going to our team-mates, and we are starting to work better as a team. We had terrific goals from Ivan and Jonti, and we are starting to improve in the way we work the ball out of defence.

The weekly coaches award this week went to Ivan. He was an exception to what was said above, his determination to get his hands on the ball was magnificent, and you could see it in his eyes as he fought for the ball. He also made some great tackles (one rewarded with a free kick in the forward zone, which he duly kicked straight through for a goal) and also took some great marks. Great work Ivan, it’s a pleasure to watch you play!

A big thank you to the mighty Blicavs. You played a great game in great spirit.
This Sunday we again play against one of our own, this time against the Lane Cove Cats Menzels U9s. Once again it should be a terrific contest, and we look forward to playing another magnificent team.
Go Cockatoos!
