Coach Greg was in the US of A and coach Gemma was in Sunny Brisbane, so coach Jono and coach Ro were left to provide all the inspirational quotes to the team today.
And what a beautiful day it was to play footy. We arrived early at the Balgowlah Suns home ground for a 1:30pm start. The previous day the GC Suns caused an upset against the Swans and although we were a long way from the SCG today there was plenty of talk that this was not going to happen to us.
Charlotte A won the toss and ran into the wind to start with. This turned out to be a great decision as we began the quarter camped in their front half with lots of attempts on goal. The ball was held pretty close in tight as both sides struggled to find space on the ground. When the Suns did get the ball out and kick clear the ball came straight back in due to our wall-like defence from Lily D, Lucy, Maia and Charli D. Elin took what she thought was a mark, but it turned out to be touched off the boot. The call of ‘play on’ did not phase her as she slotted the ball straight through the sticks.
In the second quarter the team had the small target of kicking 3 goals, but equally I wanted to make sure everyone in the side gained at least a touch of the ball in the quarter. We focused on finding a free player and using our outrageously good skills to feed the ball in their direction. Instantly we all noticed a difference in the way the ball was shared around. The 3 goals came easily (plus a couple that hit the woodwork) and we raced to a big lead at half time. The quarter was so good I noticed some of the golfers next door travelling up the fairway struggling to stay focused on their game as the Cats caused havoc, particularly, LilyS, Emma, Annabelle and Izzy W.
The second half was a similar story with two more goals, but more importantly the team looked like they were really enjoying their time on the field. Lexie P, Eloise and Grace created so many chances for goals, with Charlotte Z never giving the opposition the ball back.
Players player today was Lily D, with Lily S, Annabelle and Charlie D all taking out a team award.
Next week’s game is against a team level with us on the ladder and so we should expect a much closer result, but given what we saw today, I know the team will be up for the challenge.
