The girls of Dal Pos put in another great team performance against Balgowlah on an unseasonal warm autumn afternoon. It was an arm wrestle in the first half, with only one point scored as the nine-a-side game was played over a large field. However, the girls exploded in the third quarter with some thrilling team work around the ground.

A passage of play in the third quarter epitomised both the developing skills and the great teamwork the players showing in just their third game together. Elizabeth won the ball and booted it foward to Eliza, who took a great mark. She then kicked it quickly to the half forward line, where Genevieve took another great mark. While it didn’t eventuate in a goal, it lifted the spirits of the girls after such a dour struggle in the first half.

Genevieve and Elizabeth followed this up with a 50m run down the wing handballing to each other as they dodged and weaved past opposition players. These two plays were so good, we awarded the three girls the “Play of Day“, the first time this prestigious award has been shared three ways.

The courage award was well earned by Chloe, who is regularly found at the bottom of the pack trying to dish off the ball to a teammate. Those fights with her brothers in the backyard are finally paying off! The spirit award was given to Jeanie, who is showing huge levels of improvement in only her third game of AFL. Veronica worked her way into the game, and was rewarded with her first ever goal.

Overall the girls never gave up in what was tough conditions to play in. They run all day and supported each other with some selfless acts. In fact, they were to selfless at times, with players handing to the ball to others in worse positions. But that ability to know when to share the ball will improve as these girls progress through the season.

Well done girls
