What a great game on Sunday, and what a great way to playour first game of the season. The team really played well together, particularly as the game went on. Some great passing, players looking for their team mates, handballs going to their target, the players should be really happy with themselves.
In the first third Hornsby-Berowra dominated the play, as a couple of their players were able to get first use of the ball and take some excellent marks. But from the start of the second third the Cockatoos took control, even to the point where as umpire I was looking for ways to give our opponents a bit more of the ball and some possession in their forward half. In the last third unfortunately our defenders had little to do, but when the ball did get into their zone they swooped.
It was great to see Aza get more involved as the game wore on. He started to get his hands on the ground ball, and made really effective use of the handball. Oscar and Ollie were ball magnets, swooping whenever there was a loose ball. In the second and last third they really started to look for their team mates when kicking the ball, leading to some great marks by our forwards. Ryan took a couple of great marks and scored a goal. He worked really well with his team-mates in maintaining control of the ball. Yzabella took a great mark also, and had a couple of shots on goal. Like the rest of the team she got more involved as the game wore on which is good to see. Our two talls, Xavier and Jonti., showed off their booming kicks, and were both able to hit the scoreboard. They both worked well wherever they played on the ground, and proved themselves a safe pair of hands under the ball. Finally Jerry, in his first season of Auskick showed great skills and pace in every zone.. He also managed to kick a goal.
I hope the kids had a lot of fun, i certainly did watching and umpiring them. Please feel free to let me know if there is anything you think we can do to improve their experience at Auskick.
Although there is no scheduled training for U8’s, the kids are welcome to train with the older kids, U9’s and above, Thursday nights, 5pm Blackman Park (bottom field). If you do plan to attend, please shoot me an email, I will let the coaches know so they can ensure the kids train with the U9 group.
Next game is against St Ives at Acron Oval (1 Acron Rd, St Ives). Game time is 8am, so if we can get everyone to the ground at 7:40, so we can have bit of a warm up and talk before the game begins, that would be great. Sorry Mums, breakfast in bed might have to be a little early this mother’s day!
And don’t forget that the 2018 Lane Cove Cats Soiree is on 25 May 2018 at the UnderBar at the Longeville Hotel (Lane Cove). It should be a great night, and it would be good to get as many of the Cockatoo parents there as possible, so if you haven’t got a ticket yet, there is still time!!! There is an AFL trivia quiz and delicious finger food, as well as a bar available for you to purchase the odd drink.
I’ll look forward to seeing you on Sunday,
