After weeks of training, and a couple of practise games, our new U10 youth girls team finally hit the park for their first official game in the newest competition in Sydney.
The girls were bustling with excitement as we took on the Willoughby Wildcats down on B4. With a mix of everything from first timers to experienced Auskickers and U9 players, I didn’t expect to see the team gel straight away. However, what they lacked in cohesion, they made up for un effort.
I am also keen to provide the girls with plenty of exposure to all areas of the game. While this may result in some confusion early in the season, it will bode them well further down the track when they know how to play every position.
However, not one player shied away from a contest. This made for some scrappy play early on, but the effort finally paid off with some great passages of play.
By the last quarter, we had one instance where the girls moved the ball down the entire field with accurate kicking and great marking and handballs. While it didn’t result in a goal, it looked great and the girls seemed to get a buzz out of controlling the ball so well. We also saw some great kicking, long runs down the wing, and some excellent marks.
The girls seemed to take to heart my pre-game message of sharing the ball around. So much so that they tended to hand ball to team mates that were in worse positions, rather than get it down to the forward line quickly. But that’s part of the learning process, and certainly not something I could fault.
This year is all about having fun while learning some new skills for these girls. And by the look of the faces after the game as we sang the song, we are well on the way to achieving that.
