It was obvious from the outset that there had been quite a bit of practice over the school holidays with attendance at AFL camps, or plenty of practice kicking and catching with family.
We started with only 10 players this week, and shared two of the Willoughby players each quarter. They kindly shared their strongest players with us, and our first quarter we started very strongly with a couple of goals and behinds from Lily D, Annabel and Lily S.
The ‘fist pumps’ and ‘jumping’ by the team were great to witness, when we scored these points. Our other forwards in Elin and Izzy also featured, and it looked like our backs were going to be standing around a little.
The second quarter however saw us back in defensive mode, and Willoughby started their scoring. Zoe, Lily D, and our centres all chiming in to chase down the fast Willoughby players.
This week’s captain – Lily S and Co-captain Emma lead us out for the second half with renewed optimism.
Caitie and Ducky helped us win many of the tap outs from the ruck, but it was clear we were suffering a little holiday fatigue with a few heavy feet. I think we will need to focus on a bit of fitness work in our training to keep our momentum in the games.
The final quarter had a few moments of brilliance with Charlotte and Emma combining well for a team play that resulted in Emma scoring a perfect goal.
A good start for our final few weeks of the season
