President’s Update, May 2017

After a wet start to the season, we’ve had some magnificent weather over the past few weeks. Its certainly encouraged all the kids to hit the park and put in some extra practice sessions. In fact, while only four weeks into the season, its been amazing seeing the improvement in the players.

In terms of upcoming events, we have some exciting things ahead. Our June long weekend parent-son trip to Victoria is back on this year. With the club significantly bigger than when we first started this trip, we’ve decided to limit it to the Under 9 age group. Its an amazing experience for those involved, which culminates in a battle for The Donk Cup (a perpetual trophy put in place by our then President Denis Fitzgerald and his brother Mick, whom is President of Modewarre FC). Denis and Mick’s father (nicknamed The Donk) was a huge figure in local football and loved by all, now uniting 2 footy clubs in 2 states). This should be something every Auskicker should aspire to attend in future years.

We have our Sportsperson’s Lunch coming up on 21 July (further details here). This is now our major fundraising event for the year; with interest from all over the North Shore. Pencil it in your diary now. We will also be getting some GWS Giants players down to Blackman Park over the next month. So keep an eye out for notices from your Auskick coordinator or team manager.

The committee has been hard it it behind the scenes making sure everything is running smoothly.

We have instigated a permanent BBQ on Sunday mornings at Blackman Park. I’m sure you would agree, a bacon & egg roll early on a Sunday can be a godsend. Its also a vitally important as a source of fundraising for the club. However, we need your help to keep it going. We have created a volunteer roster to help operate the BBQ over the season. This requires each family to help out only 1-2 shifts (of a hour or so only) over the course of the season. We think this is a small contribution of time. Remember, every cent we raise goes straight back into the club to benefit the kids. Rostered time should be communicated by your team manager or Auskick coordinator. If you can’t help, please let them know so we can roster someone else on.

The money raised so far this year has already benefited the kids. We’ve purchased our first tackle bags, which have helped the older kids hone one of the most important skills of the game. We have also purchased some new temporary goal posts for junior games, and improved our equipment shed with shelving and more storage area.

Talking of volunteer work, we are also seeking someone to help out with the Rushed Behind newsletter. As I’m sure you would agree, communication is key in junior sporting club, and we like to keep you all well informed of things going on in the club. It only requires 2-3 hours per week. So if you have skills in editing, writing or marketing, we would love to hear from you.

To celebrate the work of volunteers in our club, we will be offering free tickets to upcoming AFL games in Sydney to members who have gone beyond the call of duty for the Lane Cove Cats. Congratulations to Michelle Hawtin, Caroline Macdonald and Greg Byrne for their efforts over the past few weeks (click here for more details).

Despite the season well under way, we are still seeing registrations creep in. So welcome all those new members who have joined recently.

We now have 117 registered Auskickers, a record number for Lane Cove Cats. In juniors, we have 91 boys and girls running around the park. This is up from 80 in 2016, which is amazing considering we lost to many boys to field U12 and U13 teams this year. The most exciting development in 2017 has been our first ever U12 youth girls team. From all accounts the girls are absolutely loving it. However, we are always looking for more. So if you know any girls between 10-12 who are willing to give it a go, let them now we are now offering a 75% discount on registration fees. Click here to register now.

Good luck and I’ll see you on the park!
