Youth girls footy coming to LCC

We are excited to announce that we will be entering a girls U12 team in the AFL Sydney Junior competition in 2017.

There is no doubt that women’s footy is growing exponentially at the moment. This has been spurred by the start of the first ever professional national women’s league. With the first round recording record crowds, the interest in women’s footy is sky high.

Just take a look at the exciting new AFL Women’s advert

However, this isn’t just a flash in the pan. Its been driven by a ground swell of interest from the grass roots. Girls are finally putting their hand up and asking to play in a competition of their own.

While we are a young and  growing club, we have also seen this interest rise. Last year 17% of our Auskick players were girls. We also had a couple of girls (Emma Byrne and Elin Ladmore) mixing it up with the boys in the Junior competition. But we also had a significant number of girls on the sidelines, watching their brothers running around the field but reluctant to join them.

That is the genesis of our proposed U12 team. Merran Elliot, mother of Toby (U12) and Harry Zerna (U9), was getting pestered by her daughter Charlotte about playing in a girls team. With interest strong among her group of friends, it was decided the Lane Cove Cats should try and put together a team in this year’s girls U12 competition.

Games will be played on Sunday morning, and most likely mirror the same format of the boys junior competition. If your daughter is aged 10-12 and interested in playing in this competition, please email us at girls@lanecovecats.com. More details can be found on our website (lanecovecats.com/girls).

In the meantime, we would also encourage the girls to get along and support the Giants women on 18 Feb at their home ground Blacktown International Sports Stadium, when they take on Fremantle.
