This team is a tight unit, with many boys having played nearly four seasons together. New members have been embraced quickly. This year we established a leadership group, consisting of four boys who represent the values we care most about; respect, dedication and effort. And that group; consisting of Finucane Lunnie, Hynes, Ferguson and Strassberg have been leading the team with distinction on the field all year.
And at this level of junior sport, its about playing with your friends and having a fun. So when one of your mates goes down, it can hit you hard. In an incident you see hundreds of times during a game, Sam Finucane Lunnie was tackled hard to the ground in the first half on Friday night against the Canada Bay Canons. However this time Sam didn’t bounce up straight away, having broken his arm. The team was able to put that distraction aside and get past a determined Cannon lineup to win by 49 points. But celebrations were muted when it was released we had lost one of our admired and respected leaders.
Later that night it was confirmed that Sam had broken his arm in two places and ended up having surgery the following morning. However he’s in good spirits and is recuperating at home.
Sam will be on the sidelines for an extended period. However the team will fight on as it prepares for the upcoming finals. While the team will be poorer without Sam, he’s presence will not be lost.
