With school holidays and injuries, we had only 6 regular team members available for the washed-out replay against Westbrook. To make matters worse, the Bulldogs had a full squad of 16 coming to Blackman Park.
However, great clubs rally when the chips are down. Coming to the rescue were some of our younger members of the club, casting aside any concerns about playing against much bigger boys.
With a team of U10, 11 & 12 players, you would expect to see a lack of cohesion. And that was the case for the first quarter. But the boy settled down very quickly and started playing some great team footy. The size of our club, and our strategy of everyone training together definitely had a part to play in the players gelling quickly. In fact, some of the younger players even excelled in the environment, which bodes well for coming season.
In the end, we ran out winners by five goals. However I was more pleased with the spirit that the players showed when we required some help. This type of behaviour builds a great club culture.
