This group to boys continues to amaze me.
Despite only having one win on the board at the half way mark of the season, they never gave up. The only missing ingredient was confidence in themselves. And they seem to have that in bucket loads now. Things started to click after a narrow loss to Willoughby and they ended the season with 5 wins from 6 games (including wins over the top three teams). They were worthy winners of the final spot in the top four.
However, they didn’t rest on their laurels. They not only feel like they belong in the finals, they want to win it. And that showed in the semi-final against Baulkham Hills. They movement of the ball was superb, with players linking up across the ground, making the opposition look disorganised.
Once again we had some career best performances from several players. Our back line, consisting of Russell, Fish, Strassberg, Negri and Sidhu is a great mixture of defence and attack. To keep them to only 1 point to half time, while we had 7 scoring attempts is testament to this group. They know when to run of their opponent and attack. But also can keep a close check on their opponent when required.
King and Hynes were dominant across the midfield, continually feeding ball out to our outside runners such as Ballhausen, Finucane-Lunnie, Fitzgerald and Ferguson. Our kicking to targets has improved out of sight, and we are not afraid to take the game on and run.
And our forward line of Gillard, Cheshire, Byrne & Rogers never misses an opportunity.
We now move into the preliminary final against our cross town rivals, Willoughby Wildcats. They way we are playing, this shouldn’t daunt our players. However, win or lose, I am so proud of how these boys have performed this year.
